Love Under the Stars (The Brashear Series Book 1) Book by Kathleen Shoop

1861, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Inspired by the true story of John and Phoebe Brashear who developed telescopes and lenses that are still in use today, Love Under the Stars brings the beginnings of their journey to life. Set against the steel mills of Pittsburgh, a young man has a mind for astronomy and physics, the gifted hands of a millwright, and the heart of a minister. Conflicted about which life path to take, he is further confounded when the love of his life shows up teaching Sunday school in the classroom next to his.

Phoebe Stewart is headstrong, responsible, and meticulous about her role as baker and cook in her family's household. Despite her whip-smart mind, she understands that she will live a single woman's life with her family and revels in the caring and feeding fourteen household members. Then she meets John Brashear. He opens her eyes to a universe of heavenly bodies, a world of possibility beyond the walls of her home.

Torn between the love growing between the two and Phoebe's devotion to her family, they navigate a path to where they can announce their plans to marry and buy a little home up on the South Side Slopes. It all seems to make sense… until it doesn’t. Can John and Phoebe fulfill their obligations while being true to their hearts? Can they make their dreams come true?

 Loving the new series

I am enjoying the first book of the new series. I am looking forward to reading more of this beautiful series. I loved to read love stories of the old times. The relationship is so different compared to nowadays. The love between each other is pretty the same.

I would love to be John's girlfriend. I love astronomy, water scenes, and my camera.  I think it is so romantic to enjoy the scenery and feel the warmth of your lover surrounds you while enjoying the star. I am so happy that these two found each other and fight for their relationship against all odds.  It is already a great read and cannot wait to read more.

Book Description:

A PSYCHIATRIST BECOMES PRIME SUSPECT IN THE MURDERS OF HIS PATIENTS IN A NEW THRILLER

The patients of psychiatrist Gus Young are turning up dead in Tom Saric’s new thriller, DON’T LOOK IN (October 6, 2020; Severn River Publishing), and he is the main suspect.

Gus fled the big city to escape the shame, gossip and glares of his family, friends and colleagues after he tarnished his reputation. He ends up in a small, backwater rural town in Maine where no one will know him and he can start his life over. But someone is out to get him, and is framing him for the murders of his patients.

Wanda Flynn, the sexy town prostitute who is having an illicit affair with the married mayor, is demanding that he leave his wife for her. Her brother has just been released from jail after a ten-year sentence, and is back in town. It was Wanda’s testimony that was pivotal in sealing his conviction. Suddenly she is found dead, shot in the head in front of her apartment, shortly after she had unburdened her secrets, fears and desires to Gus Young. Because of patient-client confidentiality, Gus cannot reveal that she is his client, nor what she revealed to him, even if it will help to solve the murders, or clear his name as a suspect.

Then another patient, Ned, who is suffering from paranoia and is sure he knows the identity of Wanda’s killer, is found dead in his home after he had an altercation with Gus that left him bleeding on the floor. The police find bullets in both victims that match a rare gun, the Lee-Enfield No.4, which has mysteriously vanished from Gus’s basement. And they find Wanda’s turquoise necklace in his possession.

All the evidence point to Gus. He is the prime suspect in the murders, but in order to protect his clients’ confidentiality, even after they are dead, Gust doesn’t reveal information that can prove his —Over— innocence. Gus puts his own life in jeopardy in a desperate effort to clear his name and track down the real killer. When his estranged daughter comes to visit him, her life and the life of his trusted friend Sheila, are in jeopardy from the real killer who wants to do them harm. As a sinister plot unravels, Gus discovers a horrible secret about his past.

Tom Saric, who is a psychiatrist, packs his thriller with quirky characters: the cross-dresser, the married couple who don’t enjoy sex, the psychopath who is a petty criminal, the town sex-worker, and a love interest, the tall beautiful blonde who shares his love of country music and is the first woman to show an interest in him after his messy divorce.

DON’T LOOK IN is the first in a series featuring psychiatrist Gus Young who uses his acuity in understanding the human psyche to solve murders. Fans of the HBO series, In Treatment starring Gabriel Byrne, will relish the character of Gus Young as he solves murders using psychological, not forensic, evidence.

So twisted yet so good

As much as I love reading toe-curling romance stories, suspense or mystery is my second favorite genre to read. Nothing beats that heart-thumping moment when you are about to know who the killer is or who has done it.

This is my very first book by the author. I liked this story. It is so twisted yet so good. It is a very interesting read. I enjoyed every chapter of the book. It is so scary, loved the sceneries especially the woods. It captivates my mind and my imagination. It is so brutal yet so good. The psychiatrist who helps a lot of problems now a suspect and willing to clear his reputation. It has a bizarre twist that will blow your mind. I cannot put it down. It is such an amazing read.

I am looking forward to reading the second book of the series. Well done Mr. Saric.

Book Details:

Book TitleThe Way to Remember by Martha Reynolds
Category:  Adult Fiction (18 +),  341 pages
GenreWomen's fiction, general fiction
PublisherIndependent
Release date:   June, 2020
Content Rating:  PG-13 +M. There are a few swear words, and sex is more suggested than explicit, but there are one or two moments that are provocative.

Book Description:

Set in New England at the time of the American Bicentennial, The Way to Remember is the poignant story of a displaced young woman struggling to figure out who she is within the context of her hometown and the carefully masked dysfunction of her family. "Everything can be fixed by writing a check." Words to live by for Robin Fortune's wealthy father, until he can't buy her way back into college after she's expelled for dealing pot. Now he chooses not to speak to her anymore, but that's just one of the out-of-whack situations Robin's facing. At nineteen, she feels rudderless, working in a diner by day and sleeping with a buddy from high school by night - all so strange for her because she was always the one with the plan. While her college friends plotted how to ensnare husbands, she plotted a novel, which she scratched out into a series of spiral-bound notebooks she hides in the closet. But now, there's nothing. No vision, no future, no point. In fact, the only thing she feels she has to look forward to is that her favorite author, Maryana Capture, is paying a visit to the local Thousand Words bookstore. Robin surmises that if she can convince Maryana to help her get her novel published, she'll finally get herself back on track. Except that life never takes a straight path in this intensely satisfying coming-of-age novel.

A beautiful story of failure and perseverance

A typical story of a young woman who fell into a trap of illegal drugs. The will to survive and fix what she did wrong in her life by living in her self. A beautiful story of not giving up and perseverance.

My very first book to read from the author. It is a slow pace until you reach the middle of the story. It a story of friendship, love, family, and dreams.  I liked how Robin so independent at a young age. She is a believer that dreams will come true. She is not a quitter. She fights what is right and never gives up. I adored her and hope that all the teenagers are like her with a passion for what she has.

A story of an avid fan who has a dream of writing her own story. Everything in life is not easy but if you work hard, success is not far away.
